Researchers at Newcastle University are helping to make faster progress towards the implementation of the Paris Agreement, limiting global temperature increases to 1.5-2 degrees Celsius.
The Better Climate Governance project aims to improve the effectiveness of negotiations in addressing climate change and fulfilling the goals of the Paris Agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). As countries work towards increasing their ambitions, the Better Climate Governance Network offers a space to think creatively about the way forward. The Network’s mission is to engage in open conversations and discussions about improving climate change governance within the UNFCCC negotiations.
The Network emerged from an ESRC funded project led by Dr. Katharine Rietig at Newcastle University and Christine Peringer, JD, of the World Federalist Movement – Canada and Mediators Beyond Borders International. The team’s research points to the success of facilitation approaches and the importance of best practice learning to overcome disagreements among countries.
As well as producing a toolkit of approaches to strengthen UNFCCC deliberations and decision making, a series of policy briefs have been developed to support action.
